Our Treatment Programs

Willingway offers a complete continuum of care.

What to Expect

Pre-admission assessment – To begin the treatment process, a confidential, essential pre-admission evaluation is administered over the phone by highly trained and caring Willingway admission coordinators. After the evaluation, the medical staff then reviews the information to determine if help is needed for alcohol and/or drug use and to possibly recommend treatment options or make further recommendations. All assessments are confidential. Admission coordinators are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Clinical and medical assessments – After admission, a series of assessments are completed to determine the individual’s level of substance use and identified clinical needs. After admission, each client will be assigned a counselor who will be working directly with them and their family throughout the course treatment.

Assessments include but are not limited to:

  • Medical history and physical performed by a member of the medical staff
  • Nursing assessment
  • Biopsychosocial assessment completed by a certified addiction counselor or licensed therapist
  • Trauma assessment
  • Recreation/leisure assessment
  • Family assessment

Treatment Planning: Based on the information obtained from the family, patient and the assessment tools, a treatment plan outlining goals for achieving sobriety will be developed and reviewed weekly by the inter-disciplinary treatment team.

Discharge Planning and After-Care: Discharge planning begins shortly after admission. Each client’s assigned counselor will work with the client and family to determine what services will be needed to maximize the client’s successful long-term recovery. Willingway will provide referrals based on those discharge recommendations.

Recreational Therapy: Clients are offered opportunities to learn how to use leisure time, meditation, and recreation to maintain a healthy lifestyle after discharge. Willingway has an indoor pool, hot tub, exercise room, yoga classes and other recreational activities on-site. Some off-site activities may be scheduled for clients who are here for full treatment, such as outings to the Mann Center, movies, bowling, and other recreational activities in the area.

Approach to Trauma: Willingway assesses each client for a history of trauma. Since clients are here for primary substance use disorder, it is not clinically indicated to begin intensive trauma treatment during a short-term length of stay 45 days or less. However, Willingway will assist the client in understanding how trauma has impacted their daily living, relationships and substance use.

Recommendations for ongoing trauma treatment will be made by the treatment team to the client prior to discharge. Willingway will assist in helping to identify appropriate resources to address trauma after discharge. Willingway’s primary therapeutic focus is to help clients become substance free so they may then begin effective trauma treatment which is typically a longer- term process and not usually successful when someone’s thinking is altered by substances.

Programs and Levels of Care

Medically Managed Detoxification

Detoxification is the most intensive level of care that Willingway provides. With five decades of proven experience, we are the ideal care provider for complex medical cases. Guided by our ASAM-certified medical director, our medical team has refined a detox protocol that protects against the seizures often associated with symptoms of withdrawal so that clients can remain as comfortable as possible. Willingway is also highly regarded for our expertise in treating high-level methadone and suboxone addiction. Our medical staff is able to safely treat individuals who have abused almost all combinations and amounts of mood-altering chemicals, including alcohol, street drugs, prescription drugs, methadone, and others. The length of time in detox varies from client to client depending on their level of addiction, substances used, medical history and condition, length of time using substances, and severity of use.

Methadone Detoxification

Willingway understands that it can be difficult to find a program that safely and effectively detoxes a patient off of methadone. National standards states that methadone detox programs are limited to patients on 30 mg daily dose or less utilizing buprenorphine.

We have found a way to detox patients on daily doses considerably higher than 30 mg daily. We have developed a protocol that safely and effectively detoxes over a 21-day period. We have successfully used this protocol to detox patients who were taking up to 400 mg daily dosing.

Once the medical staff and the patient feel the patient is not in danger of acute withdrawal, we start supportive and detoxification medications. The medical staff meets with the patient daily to adjust medication needs for withdrawal and detoxification. We also allow for a long, slow taper at the end of the protocol. Our patients have done surprisingly well and are able to engage in treatment programming without withdrawals and cravings.

Inpatient

This level of care is the next step in the treatment process. This program may last up to 6 weeks, although length of stay is determined based on a variety of factors, including what the client will need to have the best chance of successful long-term recovery after discharge. Treatment at Willingway combines a multitude of therapeutic modalities: group, individual, recreational therapy, 12-Step meetings, and educational programs set clients on the road to lasting recovery.

During this extended inpatient stay, clients examine how their substance use has negatively impacted them and their loved ones. Through the therapeutic process, clients review life events intimately tied to their substance use and acquire new skills for a life free from substances.

Features of this program include:

  • Gender-specific issue groups
  • Group therapy
  • Relapse prevention
  • Spirituality and self-care
  • 12-Step recovery education and meetings
  • Access to Trac9 Relapse Prevention Program
  • Weekly individual session with their assigned counselor
  • A weekly update by the assigned counselor to the family members and referral sources
  • Recreation therapy under the supervision of a certified recreation therapist
  • Discharge planning
  • After-care peer support services provided through MAPP

Short-Term Inpatient

For those individuals who may not need a longer inpatient stay or whose life circumstances prevent them from doing so, we offer the option of our short-term inpatient program.

The average length of stay for short-term inpatient is approximately 2-4 weeks, but these clients can still gain the full benefit of the Willingway experience with a targeted, comprehensive approach to recovery.

Extended Treatment/Sober Living Environment (SLE)

At Willingway, it is our belief that some individuals who are addicted to alcohol or drugs have a better chance for lasting recovery if they are exposed to a period of time in extended treatment. Willingway operates two gender specific programs designed to provide a supportive, structured environment where individuals can build skills for living sober one day at a time.

Some of these consequences may include strained family relations, legal troubles, financial woes, physical problems, workplace difficulties, and more. Adult outpatient offerings include:

Adult outpatient offerings include:

  • Intensive Outpatient – 4 days per week, 3 hours daily
  • Individual counseling
  • Drug Screens
  • Group Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Education and Community Outreach

Group Therapy in the adult program is geared toward learning to live without mood-altering chemicals. Our 12-Step philosophy is enhanced with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and incorporates a variety of offerings to promote long-term recovery.

Continuing Care Community Groups

Each client discharged from one of our programs will receive aftercare recommendations. If an individual is returning home to an area that can access one of Willingway’s thirteen continuing care community groups, we highly encourage them to do so. These weekly meetings are facilitated by volunteers who are friends of Willingway, and there is never a cost to attend. They are the ideal place for anyone who is recovering from substance abuse or is a family member or friend of someone with an addictive illness. All can receive support and encouragement from people who have travelled the road to recovery before them or who have experience, strength, and hope to share with others. These groups are open to anyone, not only those who have been through Willingway.

Willingway now offers two options for Continuing Care attendance via Zoom for those who do not reside close enough to attend one of the in-person meetings. Weekly family group therapy is now offered to all family members facilitated by a highly experienced family therapist specializing in addictions treatment via Zoom.

The Pines at Willingway Adolescent Program

The Pines at Willingway is a separate, free-standing program providing substance abuse treatment in a comprehensive therapeutic program that encompasses detoxification, residential treatment, and partial hospitalization services for adolescents and young adults (ages 14-18) dealing with a primary diagnosis of substance use disorder (youth with a primary mental health disorder, or acute psychiatric symptoms, active eating disorders, or aggressive behaviors would not be appropriate for this program).

Currently, there are very few options for adolescent treatment that specialize in primary substance abuse treatment. Most treatment options are incorporated into a psychiatric facility that also provides some limited treatment for substance abuse, but primarily focuses on behavioral and psychiatric symptomology.

The Pines offers a program for youth who have a primary substance use disorder. All therapeutic interventions are designed to address their addiction and issues related to their use of drugs or alcohol.
