Summary: Self-disclosure can pose prominent challenges for anyone working in the mental health & substance use fields – working with teens, adults, families, or ‘running’ groups. For many practitioners the art, science, and ethics of sharing about oneself is often not a dichotomous process. Let’s unpack and explore together the layers of our ongoing practices of ethical healing work & how we each may come to decide if/when to share about ourselves.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize & describe the five types of counselor & psychotherapist self-disclosure.
  • Review ethical codes for various licenses & state certification boards on Self-Disclosure, Self-Care, client, and welfare with the layers of mental health changes & needs for 2024.
  • Demonstrate 3 different experiential examples of self-disclosure in a therapeutic environment: benefits, risks, & causes of harm.
